List of IPS officers sought for vacant DGP post

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who heads the State Security Commission on Thursday directed the home department to come up with a list of five top IPS officers to fill the vacant post of Director General of Police in the state.

"The State Security Commission has decided to direct the (home) department to take up with eligible IPS officers who are willing to serve for full term the post of DGP in the state," Sangma told reporters after chairing the commission’s meet here.

"All those available officers who are qualified as per the state Police Act should be given an opportunity to indicate their willingness first," he said.

It is necessary to find out the willingness as some officers have declined the offer for the post, he said.

The post has been lying vacant for two months after the retirement of Rajiv Mehta on June 30.

As per the Meghalaya State Police Act, the state government shall appoint a DGP from among five eligible senior-most officers of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, who have been empanelled for promotion to that rank by the SSC.

The Act further states that the DGP so appointed should have a minimum tenure of one year subject to his normal date of superannuation.

Meanwhile, the SSC reviewed various issues relating to internal security apparatus of the state vis-a-vis the law and order situation and overall response of the state security.
