Champions League: PSG held by Man City in four goal thriller

Paris Saint-Germain were held to an exciting 2-2 draw by Manchester City at the Parc De Princes on Wednesday night in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Sloppy defending was the order for the night, as both teams will be disappointed with the kind of goals they conceded.

The night was not without controversy though, and David Luiz was lucky not to be sent off in the very first minute itself, hacking down Sergio Aguero near the box. A look of resignation on the Brazilian defender&’s face was obvious as he will now miss the next leg due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

Just minutes later, Blaise Matuidi burst into the box and got a vital touch to Edinson Cavani&’s through ball before being bundled over by Elaquim Mangala. The referee waved play on, despite the loud protests of the home crowd.

Luiz then made amends for his earlier transgression, as he ensured Bacary Sagna&’s leg caught him in the box, and official Milorad Mazic pointed to the spot to give PSG a chance to get an early foothold.

It was not to be though, as City keeper Joe Hart dived low to his right to save Zlatan Ibrahimovic&’s shot and was promptly mobbed by grateful team-mates.

Zlatan had another chance, when Sergie Aurier&’s cross was met by his head, but he could only direct the ball straight to Hart.

Both teams had set instructions on how to play, with City content to sit deep and hit the French side on the counter.

The out-of-form David Silva missed a golden opportunity when his header flashed wide from Jesus Navas&’s cross in the 21st minute.

Against the run of play, City took advantage of some sloppy passes by the PSG midfield to launch a counter-attack, Fernandinho releasing Kevin De Bruyne on the right who made sure his sweetly hit shot hit the back of the net. De Bruyne, City&’s record signing has just come back from injury, but he proved players of his calibre can come in any time and be the key in such important ties.

Just 38 minutes gone, and PSG were stunned.

And they were rejuvenated just three minutes later, in the most comical of fashions, when Hart played it short from a goal-kick to Fernando, whose pass ricocheted off Zlatan into the empty net. PSG couldn’t believe their luck and City were left rueing theirs after such a good start to the game.

The French side continued to dominate proceedings and were rewarded on the hour mark when Cavani&’s header was palmed straight by Hart to Adrien Rabiot, who just applied the simplest of finishes as the home side led for the first time on the night.

Zlatan was clearly obstructing Hart&’s view in the City goal and since he was clearly offside, the Manchester side will be aggreived that the goal stood.

Their lead lasted just twelve minutes though, as Aurier and PSG Captain Thiago Silva failed to clear a City cross from the right and allowed the industrious Fernandinho to pop up with yet another crucial goal.

Both teams know they could have gotten more from the tie, which is still very much in the balance despite the fact that Manchester City have two crucial away goals.

Next week&’s leg at the Etihad Stadium promises to be extremely entertaining, as both teams seek their first ever semi-final appearance in the UEFA Champions League.
