Mauro Icardi scourge of Juventus in Inter win

Defending champions Juventus suffered their first defeat in the Serie A on Sunday as a Mauro Icardi-inspired Inter Milan beat them 2-1 at the San Siro in an engaging game.

Juve manager Massimiliano Allegri sent out his side in an interesting formation, without club record signing Gonzalo Higuain, who was relegated to the bench.

As a result, the Turin side were largely toothless in attack as Inter dominated the Derby d’Italia with their purposeful running and a largely energetic display.

Even then Juve took the lead in the 66th minute when Alex Sandro sent in an inviting cross and Stephan Lichtsteiner beat Davide Santon to the ball to tap in from close range.

Inter were shocked and suddenly the largely dour encounter sprang to life as the Nerazzuri faithful urged their side to respond.

And up stepped their captain, Mauro Icardi, rising highest to head home Ever Banega&’s corner to level the tie in the 68th minute.

All hopes of a Juve smash-and-grab victory were dashed when Antonio Candreva capitalised on Kwadwo Asamoah&’s error near the Juve penalty area, and released the imperious Icardi.

Icardi was thwarted by an onrushing Gianluigi Buffon, but despite being shunted out wide, kept his cool and sent in a peach of cross with the outside of his foot for substitute Ivan Perisic. The Croatian winger&’s header was in the back of the net before Buffon could even react and the San Siro went wild with celebration.

Inter&’s captain Icardi has been sensational against Juventus in the past, and that streak continued with a man of the match display. His performance will surely up his chances of inclusion into Argentina&’s national football squad.

Inter manager Frank de Boer had been under scrutiny after an average start to the Serie A season, and an embarrassing loss to Israeli side Hapoel Beer Sheva in the Europa League on Thursday. Now, he has some respite with a win over Juventus.

Inter are now in 6th place in the league table, while Juventus are second, one point behind leaders Napoli.
