Get ahead
Last week Uttar Pradesh&’s Shiv Nadar University announced the launch of the School of Management and Entrepreneurship where Professor Shekhar Chaudhuri, former director of IIM, Calcutta, has been appointed the new director. The school will be offering a two-year MBA programme designed to ensure students become industry ready and entrepreneurially oriented. The programme will help in building abilities for creative thinking and innovation, developing analytical rigour and inculcating appropriate attitude for leading organisations of the future. The SME will invite practising managers to teach 20 per cent of the functional courses. Additionally, 15 per cent of the academic term will be devoted to experiential learning, including visits to companies, urban and rural markets, government departments,  municipal corporations, chambers of commerce and intensive skill development workshop. Admission to the MBA programme is through Cat or Gmat and the last date for submission of applications is 30 March 2014.

Looking for a job?

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India will hold its campus placement programme from 11-15 March 2014. As many as 158 candidates, who have recently completed their chartered accountancy, are likely to participate in the programme in Kolkata. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, UTI Asset Management Company Pvt Ltd, Credit Suisse Services India Pvt Ltd, MphasiS an HP Company, Indian Hotels Company Limited, Tega Industries Ltd and Universal Sompo General Insurance Company Limited are some of the companies visiting the campus for placement. ICAI organises campus placement programme at 16 different locations, twice a year in February-March and August-September.

Joining hands

Recently, governor-general of Canada David Johnston called for a partnership between India and Canada through education. After visiting the IIT, Bombay campus, Johnston said, “India tends to simplify things and produce innovations that are cost-effective. Creating a strong innovation culture requires us to communicate closely. And I think that all of you are representative of a way in which we can collaborate better together—through education.”
   The Canadian governor-general spoke on driving economic growth through innovation. He interacted with students and faculty members and answered queries on issues ranging from encouraging entrepreneurship in academic institutions to the importance of formal education and collaborating with Canadian institutions for students’ exchange. Johnston visited the institute&’s Industrial Design Centre, where products like cooking gas stoves for the visually challenged, solar cookers that can be used as a microwave, and projects like affordable housing, made by the students and faculty members, were displayed.

Innovative enterprise
The UK-based Loughborough University has launched its Massive Open Online Courses to provide free and accessible education opportunities for students as part of FutureLearn. The Maths Mooc offered at an undergraduate level is for aspirants to think mathematically and explore essential concepts through an accessible introduction to graphical and algebraic techniquesto develop an informal understanding of vital properties of points, lines and curves before formalising mathematically some of these essential notions.
