Food for thought

It was a pleasant surprise that one may not have associated with a public broadcaster.

Yet tuning in to the Kolkata station of Doordarshan, one discovered arguments being aired with great candour by speakers at a programme organised by what is still called the Calcutta Debating Society.

The city had claimed quite a number of popular debaters ranging from academics to film directors who could present their views with clarity and conviction.

The debates ranged from informal exchanges in coffee houses to formal occasions at a classy club.

Now these events are being telecast as well and they are strikingly different from the slanging matches witnessed on some channels.

Does that revive hopes of healthy exchanges on subjects ranging from politics to football? The city can do with more food for thought.
