A Thespain

Noted theatre personality Sisir Kumar Bhaduri in a write-up had stated it was Girish Chandra Ghose who had taken up a lone venture to look after the Bengal stage which was passing through bad days like an orphan. He nurtured the “orphan” and should be called the father of Bengali stage which did not have any kith or kin. Bhaduri also instructed his son not to take his mortal remains to any theatre house but to take it straightaway to Cossipur crematorium and consign it to the flames there just as Girish Chandra had been cremated there many years ago.

Girish Chandra Ghose who was lovingly called GC was not only an actor but a playwright who was expert in stage craft. His direction of Chaitanyalila, a play on the life of Sri Chaitanya brought his fame and also brought him close to Sri Ramakrishna.- Sri Ramakrishna went to see the play and blessed Binodini Dasi who had acted as Nemai in the play as “ Be conscious.” Two of GC&’s close associates Rasaraj Amritalal Bose and Amarendranath Dutta have spoken highly about his caliber as director.

He stood by Nivedita after Swamiji&’s death in 1902. His acting in Jana and Buddhadebcharit as his role as Nimchand in Dinabandhu Mitra&’s Sadhabar Ekadashi have made him immortal as an actor.
