Naredranath Dutta who later became Swami Vivekananda was probably the first person to sing songs composed by Rabindranath Tagore. As a 23 year old youth he sang Satya mangalopremamoyo tumi… in the house of the head priest of Bramho Samaj in connection with 57th Maghotsav

On 29 July, 1881 a function was held in Sadharan Bramho Samaj temple to celebrate the marriage between the daughter of Rajnarayan Basu Lilabati and Krishnakumar Mitra. Maharshi Devendranath requested Rabindranath to compose songs for the occasion.

Tagore composed a few songs of which Dui Hridayer Nodi and Subhodine esecho dohe became popular. He set up a choir comprising Narendranath Dutta who was the lead singer, Dr Sundari Mohun Das, Kedernath Mitra, Nagen Chatterjee and andho Chunilal. Later Lilabati wrote an article in Tattvobodhini Patrika on the ceremony and remarked that “Narenbabu had enthralled the audience by his sweet voice and rendition.”

Narendranath who knew that Sri Ramakrishna who was himself a great singer loved only those songs with deep spiritual meaning and he often sung Tagore&’s songs before his Master. The songs which had often sung were Mahasinghasane boshi, tomarei koriachi joboner dhrubotara and E ki sundoro sobha and Sri Ramakrishna went into trance after listening to them.

In Baranagore Math where the monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna assembled after he death Narendra was found to be singing Amra je sishu oti,oti kshudro mon. He sang Tagore&’s song Mori lo mori in Benaras in 1891-92 on meeting Kshitimohan Sen.

In an effort to explore the relation between Rabindranath Tagore and Narendranath Dutta yet to become Swami Vivekananda, Pratishrvti, a cultural organisation will bring out a audio compact disc titled ui Hridayer Nadi – Narener Rabigaan at 5.00 p.m at Press Club today.
