Shakespeare fest

Centuries after William Shakespeare had penned his plays, the popularity of these pieces continue to rise.

On the eve of his 450th birth anniversary, Rabindra Bharati University&’s department of drama, in collaboration with the Union ministry of culture is scheduled hold the 25th UGC International Conference and Theatre Festival on “Shakespeare Reconsidered”. The festival will be held between March 17 and 20, 2015, at the Jorasanko Thakurbari. The proposed Festival endeavours to bring together performers and teachers to exchange dialogues through discussions, paper presentations and theatre performances.

The four- day event will feature conferences, theatre festival based on Shakespeare&’s works, exhibition on Shakespeare and the Bengali Theatre.

Reputed persons from the field of theatre will deliver keynote addresses and special lectures.

They include Robert Gordon professor of drama and director of the Pinter Centre for Research in Writing and Performance, Goldsmiths College, UK, Mohan Maharishi, professor of drama, Panjab University and eminent theatre personality, Amitava Roy professor of English, Rabindra Bharati University, Ashok Mukhopadhayay, professor and eminent theatre personality.

Shakespeare&’s works have inspired various theatre productions, giving rise to a rich body of experimental productions each intellectually stimulating.

The plays to be presented include Macbeth Question – Santanu Bose – Bose Studio, New Delhi, Fall of a King – Palash Protim Mech – OFTAS, Sibsagar, Macbeth – Sudip Chakraborty – Padatik Nattya Sangsad, Dhaka, Bangladesh, Fagun Rater Goppo – Tarun Pradhan – Theatre Repertory, Rabindra Bharati University.
