Zenith, a two-day Inter School/ College Karate-Do Tournament, by the JKF Gojukai Karate – Do Takuji Kenbukan India was held recently at the Jewish Girls’ School. It took place under the guidance of All India Chief and Referee Sensei Dipak Kumar Shaw.
The occasion was graced by Joydeep Karmakar (Olympian and Shooter) as the chief guest. The main events were Kata, Kumite and Team Kata.
The programme started with a warm up session that included all kinds of exercises and a quick review of the Kata’s followed by Kata and Kumite events for boys and girls according to their age, belt and category. Various events took place starting from white belt to black belt. The white belt events took place on the first day which was based on basic things of Karate such as punches and kicks.

The black belt events took place on the second day where seniors performed Kata Tensho, the last Kata of the Gojukai style. Each event had a champion, a first runners up and two second runners up.
The programme came to an end with the prize distribution ceremony where male and female (junior and senior) karatekas of the year were announced. Anushka Raychowdhury (Calcutta Girls’ High School) and AnanyaMaity (St. Thomas’ Girls School) were junior and senior female karatekas of the year while Debmalyo Sil (The Calcutta Boys’ School) and Anjani Kumar Jajodia (St. Xavier’s College) were the junior and senior male karatekas respectively.

Patriotism in school
Delhi Public School, Durgapur celebrated the 70th Independence Day on 15 August 2016. The programme commenced with the flag hoisting by the Principal of the school, Umesh Chand Jaiswal followed by the national anthem.
The school choir sung Patriotic songs medley. It was followed by a skit staged by the students on the freedom fighter Khudiram Bose. Up next was Bulbuls, the girls’ scout of the school who performed on the song “Kadam Kadam Badaye Jaa” followed by a recitation session and dance performances by students from classes V-VIII.
The programme came to an end with a vote of thanks, by the teacher-in-charge, Sobha Thakur.
Beats of independence
The senior students of classes VI-XII of Loreto Day School, Elliot Road along with the Rainbow Children participated in a dance drama, ‘Aazaadiyan’ on 22 August. The programme showcased events that took place from during the Indus Valley Civilization till the time of Independence.
The programme began with an invocation to God through a hand mime staged by the students of classes XI-XII. To name a few of the major events like the introduction of Jainism, Buddhism, Slave Dynasty, the East India Company, Battle for Bengal, Chutnification of the British and Quit India Movement were enacted through dance-drama. Presentations were also given on the above mentioned topics. The programme came to an end with a note of inspiration to the youth.
