Shailesh Upreti wins $500,000 clean-tech award

An Uttarakhand-origin scientist-turned- entrepreneur brought laurels for the hill state by winning a $500,000 cash award in USA‘s largest clean-tech business competition held in New York recently.
The prestigious 76West Clean Energy Competition reward was awarded to Dr. Shailesh Upreti, an IIT Delhi alumnus, and inventor of the patented technology which not only enhances Lithium-Ion battery lifetime to more than 20+ years but also improves its storage capacity & power, and reduces heat in the event of fire or short-circuit. Upreti hails from Almora in Uttarakhand and his technology has been licensed to a group of companies in New York , three other companies globally to manufacture next generation batteries that can be used to store solar energy as well as run electric vehicles such as cars, trucks and buses.
Shailesh Upreti said, “The technology we continue to develop is carved out from a platform technology and there is wide range of opportunities for local companies to participate in the growing supply chain serving both major and niche markets. We have identified 5 local companies as supply chain partners to commercialize drop-in replacements for cathodes and anodes for next generation Lithium-ion batteries. In 5-10 years’ time frame we will be creating an eco-system which will eventually lead to the growth of more companies around us and I see New York as a hub of Lithium-ion batteries on the global map.”

The award will help with more than just commercialization — Dr. Upreti will provide learning opportunities to upcoming entrepreneurs and internship prospects to graduate students of the State University of New York at Binghamton. Students will be provided hands-on work experience at the state-of- the-art laboratory facility being used by Charge CCCV LLC, the technology company co-founded by Dr. Upreti in New York.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s 76West Clean Energy competition is the institution’s process to identify viable advanced green technology businesses from around the world and award companies in-line with its mission of advancing innovative energy solutions in ways that improve New York’s economy and environment.
