BJP gheraos Bargarh collector’s office

The state unit of BJP led by president Basant Kumar Panda and national secretary Suresh Pujari gheraoed the office of the collector of Bargarh over the failure of the government to mitigate the sufferings of farmers. The BJD government had boasted of a special package to farmers in drought hit areas last year. Not a single one of the announcements have been implemented and farmers have been left in the lurch, charged the BJP. “ The chief minister Naveen Patnaik in his Sohela farmers convention last year had declared Rs.100 bonus per quintal for the farmers. But not a single farmer of the state has got it till date,” said Basant Panda.

Similarly, from the start the government has failed in every front to safeguard the interest of the farmers in state, Panda alleged. “But in a very planned manner, the state government is obstructing the benefits of the central schemes from reaching farmers”,he added. “Due to such negligence of the state government, farmers’ suicide had increased last year and the highest deaths were in Bargarh district” said Sureswar Satapathy, a resident of the district cum a senior leader of the party. “Bargarh is the food bowl of the state. But the criminal neglect of the farm sector has made it an area where maximum number of suicides by distressed farmers took place last year” he remarked. Due to lack of cold storage, farmers get compelled to sell vegetables at throw away prices with minimum profit margins he said furthere.

Pujari, alleged that the farmers of the state and this region in particular are yet to get the input subsidy although the central government had provided adequate funds for the purpose. The leaders of the BJP gathered from all over the state further mentioned the irregularities committed in paddy procurement where crores of rupees have been misappropriated by an unholy nexus of the ruling party and the government officials.
