Compensation: Farmers hit the streets again

For the second successive day farmers hit the streets in western Odisha districts denouncing the state government for its failure to pay drought compensation, crop insurance and the promised Rs.100 per quintal over and above the minimum support price.

On Thursday, the farmers had gathered in Sambalpur and on Friday they staged a road block at Bargarh district and a protest meeting in Kalahandi district. Besides the drought assistance which is long overdue, the farmers have also been demanding that Aadhar Card should not be made mandatory during procurement operations.

They have also drawn attention to the deficient rainfall in some parts affecting agricultural operations this monsoon. Farmers of the Sadar Block in Kalahandi district demanded that the state government must announce their region drought-hit.
